Obituary for John Willie Freeman

John Willie Freeman, age 73 of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to the late Gloster Freeman and Berlie Freeman on December 14, 1946.

John accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Faulkner. He attended Capleville High School, where he was a member of the basketball team and played saxophone in the band.

As a teenager and the eldest child, he worked at his father's landscaping business (which had passed down from his grandfather) to help support his younger siblings. It was while working under his father's leadership that he learned the importance of hard work, family support, and entrepreneurship.

John was united in marriage to Laverne Clark and to their union four children were born. John always wanted the best for his family. His goal in life was to be a great provider and a loving husband. He took the same skills that he learned under his father's tutelage and established is own company, Freeman Carpet Service. John's passion, drive, and dedication for the carpet business led him to share his skills and knowledge with many young men, including his sons and grandson. He hoped to instill in them a positive work ethic that would help them to be successful in life. After being self-employed for over forty years, he retired.

John was a lover of golf, receiving many trophies and awards for his participation in golf tournaments throughout Memphis, Jackson, and Little Rock. He could also be found on the lushes green of the Pine Hill Golf Club, where he was a member. John also loved hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gloster and Berlie Freeman and brother, Charles Freeman.

John leaves to cherish his loving memories a wife, Laverne G. Freeman; two sons, Willie Freeman (Shudunika) and Johnathan Freeman (Lawanda) of Memphis, and two daughters, Katrina Freeman and Juwana White (Robert) of Memphis, one brother; James Freeman (Patricia) of Memphis, four sisters; Lois Arnett (Henry), Betty Johnson (Ricky), Joyce Taylor (*Calvin) and Pamela Green of Memphis, sisters-in-law; Joyce Lloyd (*James) and Joann Lasane (*Velvet) of Memphis, brothers-in-law; Thomas Greer (*Doris) of Memphis, sixteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish his memory.
